Gameplay Basics
This page explains the fundamental mechanics of Among the Stars.
If you’re playing for the first time, the same information is also available directly in the game through the built-in tutorial.
Core Gameplay
During a level, blue and yellow stars appear in sync with the music. Your goal is to click each star exactly when the white ring reaches it.
- Blue Stars → Left click (or your custom key from the settings)
- Yellow Stars → Right click (or your custom key from the settings)
Timing and accuracy are essential to achieving high scores.
You’ll also encounter blue and yellow octagons, which use the same input as stars. When an octagon appears, you must click it as quickly as possible. The faster you react, the more it boosts your total score through a multiplier. However, if your reaction is too slow, that same multiplier will reduce your overall score instead.
How Scoring Works
Each time you hit a star, the game calculates a score based on two factors:
- Timing accuracy — How close your click is to the exact moment the white ring touches the star.
- Cursor position accuracy — How close your mouse is to the center of the star when you click.
Both factors are measured as a “delta” (difference), and combined into a final value.
Each hit awards a score between 7 and 20 points, which is then added to your total score for the level.
Missing a star gives 0 points and counts toward the loss condition.
Losing a Level
In Among the Stars, missing 5 stars results in losing the level.
It’s worth noting that only stars count toward this loss condition.
For example, if you miss 4 stars and 1 octagon, you won’t lose the level.
However, missing an octagon, will still strongly reduce your total score.
